Profession: Murderer and Body Snatcher

Biography: Ed Gein was known as the "Butcher of Plainfield" and the "Plainfield Ghoul" a murderer for his crimes which traumatised the United States in the 1950s. His psychological and behavioural profile later inspired several famous fictional characters in literature and film.

Gein grew up on an isolated farm in Wisconsin with his domineering mother. After her death in 1945, he became increasingly reclusive. During this period, Gein began robbing graves and eventually committed two murders.

In 1957, authorities arrested Gein following the disappearance of Bernice Worden. A search of his property revealed gruesome discoveries, including household items made from human remains. Gein confessed to the murders and multiple grave robberies.

The court found Gein mentally unfit for trial. He was later tried and found guilty but legally insane. Gein spent the remainder of his life in mental institutions, passing away in 1984.

Gein's case had a significant impact on popular culture. His story influenced characters in several well-known works, including "Psycho" (1960), "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (1974), and "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991).
