The Life of H. Rap Brown aka Jamil Al-Amin

It seemed like a fool’s errand to send Jamil Al-Amin a letter, expecting a response. But there I was, in the summer of 2019, reading his reply, sent from the U.S. Penitentiary in Tucson, Ariz. Peace be unto those who do Good, Rembert. May The Creator Reward you for your kind thoughts and words. Though this part of our journey is defined by danger, and the goal seems distant, no roads are without endings …

The Montgomery Bus Riders Who Came Before Rosa Parks

On March 2, 1955, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin was sitting on a totally full bus in Montgomery, Ala., when the driver asked her and three black schoolmates give up the whole row so that a white woman could sit. According to her biographer Phillip Hoose’s account of the events, her classmates got up and moved to the back, but Colvin did not — and the white woman remained standing, refusing to sit in the same row as the black teenager.

Theater: Oliver Twisted | TIME

Oliver! Lionel Bart, 31, is not too proud to help Charles Dickens, Immortal. In “freely adapting” Oliver Twist, Britisher Bart, who wrote book, music and lyrics, has blue-penciled out the socially conscious harshness of Dickens, and mauve-penciled in the timeless hokum of Showland. Dickens takes the count after approximately two minutes and 35 seconds of the first act. As the curtain goes up on Sean Kenny’s somber hewn-wood set, a dozen or so boys are released from their kennel-like pen.

US Warns Top Gun Pilots to Be Wary of Job Offers From China

U.S. intelligence officials are issuing a stark warning to America’s former “Top Gun” pilots: Don’t help China.  A new threat bulletin issued Wednesday warns that China’s People’s Liberation Army “continues to target” current and former Western fighter pilots to help teach Chinese pilots how to master one of the hardest maneuvers in aviation: taking off and landing on aircraft carriers. In some cases, the naval aviators may be unaware they are helping train pilots for China’s military.

Velotric Discover 2 Review: A Powerful, Durable E-bike!

I’ve only heard good things about Velotric’s lineup of e-bikes, so I was excited when they reached out for me to test ride their then-upcoming Discover 2 Commuter E-bike. Unfortunately, there are plenty of underwhelming e-bikes that aren’t as rugged, comfortable, or user-friendly as they should be considering the average price of one of these rides. But I’m happy to say that the Discover 2 is an excellent investment for anyone who needs an e-bike with tank-like durability that cruises like a dream.

Why So Many Bitcoin Mining Companies Are Pivoting to AI

As AI companies work furiously to improve the intelligence and usefulness of their products, their demand for cheap, plentiful energy has skyrocketed. This gold rush has been extremely profitable for an unlikely beneficiary: Bitcoin miners. In recent months, major Bitcoin mining companies have started to swap out some of their mining equipment in favor of rigs used to run and train AI systems. These companies believe that AI training could provide a safer and more consistent source of revenue than the volatile crypto industry.
