A year ago Baltimore’s Mayor Thomas Ludwig John D’Alesandro Jr. was reeling from the blows of personal and political misfortune (TIME, April 26). His second son, Franklin Delano Roosevelt D’Alesandro, had been indicted for statutory rape; acquitted, young D’Alesandro was charged with committing perjury at the same trial. (He was again acquitted.) Charges of graft were billowing around City Hall, e.g., the mayor’s friend, Dominic Piracci, who had most of the city’s garage-building business, was convicted of conspiracy to defraud the city, and the record revealed that Piracci (whose daughter married the mayor’s eldest son) had written checks totaling more than $11,000 to the mayor’s wife.
Radio: Harvest Moon | TIME
To modern bobby-soxers, her name means next to nothing. But it is sweetly nostalgic news to folks in their forties that a trim, silver-haired, fiftyish, blues singer next week begins a new radio show—her first in twelve years. Youngsters may be puzzled by Ruth Etting’s unsubtle singing of the old songs she made famous (Ten Cents a Dance, Love Me or Leave Me, Shine On, Harvest Moon). Her straightforward style is a far cry from the slick and silken whisperings of the younger generation’s favorite song pluggers.
Speaking Truth to Trauma in 'Things We Didn't Talk About...'
For all the light that #metoo has shined into dark corners, many among us still swallow the destructive myth that most rapists are armed strangers lurking in alleys. The past two years have seen countless powerful examples of the truth: rapists are usually someone the victim knows, often quite well. But the stranger-danger emphasis that remains creates a shield, allowing perpetrators to avoid seeing themselves as doing real harm.
Jeannie Vanasco, an English professor and a survivor, wanted to delve into the motivations and behavior of rapists.
Stop Calorie Counting if You Want to Lose Weight
Keri Rabe, a 41-year-old elementary school librarian in Austin, Texas, used to be a hard-core calorie counter. Each day for a year, she logged everything she ate, squeezing in caloric space for twice-baked potatoes and tater tot casseroles by making them with low-fat dairy, believing fat would make her fat. She studied the menu before eating out at restaurants, choosing a dish by how many calories she had left for the day.

When you’ve reached the top of your game, where can you go next? It’s a question that plagues the protagonist of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s latest novel, the ’90s-set tennis drama Carrie Soto Is Back, coming Aug. 30. Carrie, now 37 years old, steps out of retirement to reclaim the record that made her a legend, just tied by a young hotshot. With 20 Grand Slams to her name, she’s desperate to live up to the reputation for dominance she once believed was unimpeachable but now feels slipping away, forcing her to reckon with how much of her identity is wrapped up in her record—and to wonder if she’s expecting too much of herself in an attempt to prove her worth to the world.
The Murky World of Weapons Dealers
In any ordinary business, Manucher Ghorbanifar would cut an implausibly mysterious figure. Officially, he has been a shipping executive in Tehran and a commodities trader in France. By his own account he was a refugee from the revolutionary government of Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini, which confiscated his businesses in Iran, yet he later became a trusted friend and kitchen adviser to Mir Hussein Mousavi, Prime Minister in the Khomeini government. The Press: McLean Out | TIME
Advertising and circulation dropped off because of unappetizing publicity about the publisher’s “offenses against public decency.” Certain advertisers deducted from their payments $27,000 uncollectable personal debts against the publisher. Churches refused to advertise in the paper because of the publisher’s “unchurchmanlike” reputation. Morale of the employes was shattered by the attendance of the publisher’s woman friend at office conferences. The publisher attended only two board meetings in the last two years.
This explosive blackhead cluster is every pimple popper's dream
As her name would imply, Dr. Pimple Popper has turned this into an art form, and the popularity of her amazing popping videos has led to several Instagram accounts and YouTube channels, as well as her own TLC show.
There are plenty of ways to get rid of a cluster of blackheads. And though the right facial cleanser or a cleansing brush are the gentler ways of saying goodbye to a pesky spot, the very best of all is a satisfyingly juicy pop.

The 20-year-old from North Carolina had a typical Southern upbringing, spending plenty of time playing outside and participating in sports. "I played football and wrestled, played soccer, all that good stuff," Hathcock told MensHealth.com. "As a kid, I didn't really think about what I ate." As he entered high school, Hathcock suffered a series of injuries that he ignored for too long, including tendon tears in both knees, which sidelined him for good.
This Mercedes-Benz stretch van feels like a private jet
Narrator: German aftermarket supplier Klassen builds only what can be described as private jets on wheels. The company takes premium vehicles and turns them into deluxe stretch limousines that cater to the demands of the most high-level clients. This rendering illustrates just how far the company lengthens factory vehicles in order to provide the space and comfort their customers desire. This Mercedes-Benz stretch V-Class van is a prime example.
