The beautiful flower that turns to skull when it dies

Snapdragons are a type of flower that can be found in gardens, parks, and flower shops. They come in many bright colours like red, pink, yellow, and white. Their petals are soft and can look like a dragon’s mouth, which is how they got their name. But what makes snapdragons really interesting is what happens after they bloom and die. When snapdragons die, the flower dries up, and the seed pod that's left behind looks just like a tiny skull.

The Brain: The Power of Hope

David’s head was literally stuffed with lung cancer. I was called in to take care of his hip and pelvic bones broken by the growing metastases. His seeming nonchalance about the pain and the surgery was clearly out of concern for his beautiful, young family–his wife Carol, a nurse, and his three kids, who were there every night. He couldn’t keep up the carefree charade over the next two weeks, though, as his speech slurred, then became incoherent.

The Case for Mark Kelly as Kamala Harris VP Pick

In the blink of an eye on Sunday last, the 2024 presidential race was totally transformed by Joe Biden’s historic withdrawal, followed by his immediate “full support and endorsement” of running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris. Oddsmakers, insiders, and cable news pundits were suddenly confronted with a tantalizing new political calculus. No longer a contest between two aging nominees—a current and a former POTUS—now Democrats changed their lineup, leaving open only the question of who would be Harris’ vice presidential candidate.

The Divorce Rate Is Dropping. But That May Not Be Good News

Have you heard that statistic that half of all marriages will end in divorce? It’s wrong. Even if that many marriages ever did disintegrate at one point, they don’t now. Divorce is on the decline and has been since the 1980s in America (when that 50% divorce statistic took hold). Experts now put your chances of uncoupling at about 39% in the U.S. This sounds like such promising news. Families are sticking together!

The Korean War and American History: How the Conflict Started

Though the Korean War started on this day 65 years ago—June 25, 1950—when North Korean tanks crossed the 38th parallel, the boundary with South Korea, TIME’s reporting from the following week reveals it took several days for the United States to realize the scope of what had happened. It was early Sunday morning in Korea, the middle of Saturday afternoon in Independence, Mo. In the former, TIME reported, “North Korean radio broadcast war whoops” as “past terraced hills, green with newly transplanted rice, rumbled tanks.

The Lab Rat: How to Improve Memory in 15 Minutes

Grove Pashley/Getty Stories about brain research can get a little boring if you just cite an endless stream of academic papers and statistics. So welcome to Healthland’s latest feature: The Lab Rat. Here, I subject myself to the same kinds of psychological and neurological testing that I’ve been writing about for two years. Then I use that personal experience to understand more fully all the papers and statistics. That’s the idea, anyway.

The Small Change Hospitals Can Make for a Big Climate Impact

Doctors have never been ones to downplay the impact of climate change on health. As far back as 2009 the Lancet Commission on managing the health effects of climate change described it as the “greatest global health threat of the 21st century.” Last month, an international health organization representing more than 46 million health professionals wrote an open letter to COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber asking him to commit to a phase-out of fossil fuels in order to improve the health prospects of future generations and save lives.

Tom Brady Retires at 45: A Timeline of His Career

Tom Brady, one of the greatest NFL players in history, says he’s retiring—exactly one year after making a similar announcement, only to renege and return to the field. This time, though, he says it’s “for good.” After completing his 23rd season, the 45-year-old quarterback marked the end of his career with a short video on social media—and poked fun at his previous false start on retirement. “I’m retiring. For good,” Brady said in the clip.

TONYA, THE X-RATED VIDEO | TIME

TIME July 26, 1994 12:00 AM EDT The Tonya Harding saga crossed a new frontier of sordidness with a plan by Penthouse magazine to reveal nude shots of the Olympic Bad Girl and ex-hubby Jeff Gillooly romping on their wedding night.
