Joel Sternfeld: A Modern Masters First Pictures

Among a group who legitimized color as a serious medium for art photographers in the 1970s and 1980s, Joel Sternfeld first came to prominence in 1987 with the publication of American Prospects. The book, which featured pictures taken on a series of road trips across the country, subtly documented underlying socioeconomic issues in America with irony and humor. Both poignant and formally beautiful, the images are now considered one of the most important works from the period, and the tome a landmark contribution to the history of American photography.

Summerall then then teed up his partner, analyst John Madden like he had so many times before.

Odorless Highlands (Cont’d) Sirs: . . . You say the U. R. W. called a protest strike, that 3,000 men swarmed out of the plant. The Goodyear strike was an unauthorized “outlaw”‘ disturbance, perpetrated principally by WPA groups and non-Goodyear people, many admittedly former rubber workers, now unemployed in this era of the more abundant life. You say Akron police “let a nonstriking minority in and out.” Actually 85% and better of Goodyear employees were on the job the day following the so-called night of rioting, and the U.

August 18, 2015 11:00 AM EDT By the time Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita was published in the United States on this day, Aug. 18, in 1958, the book wasn’t exactly new. As TIME reported in a long review of the work upon its American release, Nabokov had come to the U.S. during World War II with “intellectual luggage [that] included fragments of a book that later, published in Paris in 1955, became a must item of the contraband spice trade in which Henry Miller’s Tropics have bulked large.

Mad Men Recap: Season 7, Episode 1: "Time Zones"

“We have found ourselves rich in goods, but ragged in spirit,” Richard Nixon announces from a television screen toward the end of Mad Men‘s seventh-season premiere. “Reaching with magnificent precision for the moon, but falling into raucous discord on earth.” The quote, from Nixon’s first inaugural address, doesn’t just offer a clue about the notoriously secretive timeline of the acclaimed AMC drama — hello, January of 1969! — it’s also a great summary of where its characters stand after last year’s season finale: managing just fine on the outside, but still suffering where no one can see.

Martin Luther King Jr Photo: The Story Behind Chicago Attack

Though such was not the case during his lifetime, it’s uncontroversial today to note that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American hero of the civil rights movement, a hero whose birth is celebrated by Americans each year with the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. More than perhaps any other American, King has come to represent peace — which is just one reason why this image of him brought to his knees in Chicago is so shocking.
