The A to Z of Artificial Intelligence

As artificial intelligence becomes a larger part of our world, it’s easy to get lost in its sea of jargon. But it has never been more important to get your bearings than today. AI is poised to have a major impact on the job market in the coming years (see: Automation). Discussions over how to manage it are playing a larger part in our political conversation (see: Regulation). And some of its most crucial concepts are things that you won’t have been taught in school (see: Competitive Pressure).

The History Behind the Met Gala

The annual Met Gala is held to celebrate the dresses on display inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but on May 6, all eyes will be on the celebrities entering the museum in dresses that are works of art in themselves. Hosted the first Monday of every May, the Met Gala serves to raise money for the museum's Costume Institute. Over the years, the party has evolved from a dinner of Manhattan socialites to a must-watch red carpet and costume party, featuring star attendees from all over the world.

The New Sexism | TIME

Women have come a long way, baby, but not as far as we’d like to think. That’s the provocative message of the new book Enlightened Sexism. The blatant discrimination of eras past, says author Susan Douglas, has been supplanted by a more insidious form of bias, which suggests that sexist messages are O.K. if couched in irony. (It’s fine to enjoy watching catty contestants on The Bachelor snipe at one another — because, come on, we all know most women aren’t like that.

The True Meaning of 'Give Me Liberty'

Almost 250 years ago, four weeks before the battles of Lexington and Concord, Patrick Henry rose in St. John’s Church in Richmond, Va., to urge Americans to arm for a war that he saw as inevitable. He famously concluded his call to arms: “Give me liberty, or give me death.” Patriots embraced Henry’s dramatic refrain, and rallying militia members sewed it into their hunting shirts. Since then, his words have echoed through the centuries, here and abroad.

The True Story Behind The Spy on Netflix

Around the world, there are few spy agencies that inspire the level of intrigue that Israel’s Mossad does. And among its agents, there are few, if any, that have achieved the status of Eli Cohen, who in the mid-1960s posed as a wealthy Arab businessman for years in order to infiltrate the highest levels of the Syrian regime and send invaluable intelligence back to his Israeli handlers. Cohen’s story is recounted in The Spy, a six-episode Netflix miniseries premiering Sept.

When I Had My Kids, I Didnt Expect This: Grandparent Envy

It often happens during a class with one of my kids. We’re together, and I’m relishing “co-learning” with my 3- or 5-year-old. (Did you know the squares on a turtle’s shell are called scutes?) I look up and notice some other kid with an engaged, adoring caregiver — someone who’s significantly older even than I am, and I’m one of those geriatric wonders who didn’t give birth until her 40s. I realize that child is with his grandmother.

Where Venezuela Goes From Here

The day after Venezuela’s hotly-anticipated July 28 presidential election, the National Electoral Council walked an implausible tightrope. It declared that it could not provide the world with the actual results of the vote given that Venezuela has been subjected to a “foreign terrorist cyber-attack.” Yet somehow it conclusively and “irrevocably” declared the autocratic Nicolás Maduro as the winner with 51.2% of the vote over opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia’s 44.2%. The opposition was ready to prevent a stolen election.
