Biography: Patrick Kane is an American professional ice hockey player best known for his time with the Chicago Blackhawks. He won three Stanley Cup championships and earned recognition as one of the best American-born players. Kane achieved numerous awards, including the Calder Memorial Trophy, the Conn Smythe Trophy, and the Hart Memorial Trophy. He was also a key figure in international competitions and reached the milestone of 1,000 career points.

This week’s cover story on an extraordinary farm lad is in large part the work of another farm lad not so many years senior to Star Farmer Joe Moore. The assignment of T. George Harris to the story of the 21-year-old winner of the Future Farmers of America award was a natural.
Harris, 31, was recently named to head our Chicago Bureau. The dozen years prior to that he had devoted in about equal measure to the university, the Army and journalism.

After Oklahoma City’s 105-94 Game 1 win over the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals Tuesday night, the Thunder point guard again wore a loud shirt and bright red glasses, with no lenses, to the post-game press conference.

As the conflict in Syria approaches its third anniversary this month, humanitarian agencies are dealing with a growing sense of donor fatigue from both nations and individuals. A new commercial from Save the Children aims to remind people that the violence happening in Syria is very real.
The commercial is modeled in the popular “one second per day” video format, in which people chronicle a year of their lives through quick one-second clips.
Shutting Down Rancho Seco | TIME
In all the decades of the nation’s fuming debate over nuclear power, opponents had never spoken with such indubitable authority as Sacramento voters did last week. They became the first ever to vote, by a solid 53.4%, to shut down a functioning nuclear power plant. The decision, in a special referendum, put an end to the operations of the 15-year-old Rancho Seco facility owned by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. Within twelve hours after the polls closed, SMUD directors, who had pledged in advance to abide by the decision, had started shutting down the plant 25 miles southeast of California’s capital city.

Skateboarding Video 41-year-old Man | TIME
A 41-year-old New York City stay-at-home dad has been posting YouTube videos of himself learning to skateboard every day, and he’s been steadily improving his skills.
“I never thought I was cool enough when I was a kid to skate. Once I reached my 40th birthday, I decided I didn’t really care about cool or uncool anymore, so I bought a board,” Ben Jaeger-Thomas told TIME.
Before 40, the stay-at-home dad who also does voice acting work had never stood on a board, so skating has been a ankle-whacking, board-kicking and life-alteringly “Zen” ride for him.
