PCWorld Exits Print, and the Era of Computer Magazines Ends

PCWorldIn the most interesting historic PCWorld photo I have, from late 1982 or early 1983, Bill Gates talks about MS-DOS 2.0 with PCW staffers. From left: Microsoft’s Chris Larson, PCW’s Steve Cook, Gates, Microsoft's Tandy Trower and founding PCW editor Andrew Fluegelman. The news isn’t shocking. In fact, it’s sort of a shock it didn’t happen several years ago. After slightly more than thirty years in print, PCWorld magazine is ceasing publication, effective with the current issue, to focus on its website and digital editions.

Publisher's Letter, Oct. 24, 1955

Dear TIME-Reader: This week’s cover story on an extraordinary farm lad is in large part the work of another farm lad not so many years senior to Star Farmer Joe Moore. The assignment of T. George Harris to the story of the 21-year-old winner of the Future Farmers of America award was a natural. Harris, 31, was recently named to head our Chicago Bureau. The dozen years prior to that he had devoted in about equal measure to the university, the Army and journalism.

Review: The L Word: Generation Q Just Doesn't Work

To understand the extent to which mainstream media depictions of the LGBTQ community have evolved over the past 15 years, you need only compare Showtime’s The L Word with early episodes of its upcoming sequel, The L Word: Generation Q. When it premiered in 2004, the show broke ground by virtue of its premise alone: queer women in Los Angeles live and love in high soap opera fashion. The cast was uniformly thin, long-haired, feminine and conventionally attractive.

Sally Jessy Raphael to Russell Westbrook: Beware of the Red Glasses

The sartorial stylings of NBA players have received lots of attention of late, and Russell Westbrook is setting new standards. After Oklahoma City’s 105-94 Game 1 win over the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals Tuesday night, the Thunder point guard again wore a loud shirt and bright red glasses, with no lenses, to the post-game press conference.

Save the Children Ad Imagines Syria Conflict in United Kingdom

March 5, 2014 2:40 PM EST As the conflict in Syria approaches its third anniversary this month, humanitarian agencies are dealing with a growing sense of donor fatigue from both nations and individuals. A new commercial from Save the Children aims to remind people that the violence happening in Syria is very real. The commercial is modeled in the popular “one second per day” video format, in which people chronicle a year of their lives through quick one-second clips.

Shutting Down Rancho Seco | TIME

In all the decades of the nation’s fuming debate over nuclear power, opponents had never spoken with such indubitable authority as Sacramento voters did last week. They became the first ever to vote, by a solid 53.4%, to shut down a functioning nuclear power plant. The decision, in a special referendum, put an end to the operations of the 15-year-old Rancho Seco facility owned by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. Within twelve hours after the polls closed, SMUD directors, who had pledged in advance to abide by the decision, had started shutting down the plant 25 miles southeast of California’s capital city.

Singer thinks Future could kill fianc Russell Wilson

TMZ reports that Ciara reportedly thinks her football star fiancé could have murder in mind following his threat string of emojis which Future posted last year. The “Goodies” singer has now filed new documents in her ongoing defamation suit against the father of her two-year-old son. ADVERTISEMENT TMZ claims she also brought up his recently released track with DJ Esco, “Juice,” on which he raps, “Tryna f--k my baby mama, dog what’s up with you?

Skateboarding Video 41-year-old Man | TIME

A 41-year-old New York City stay-at-home dad has been posting YouTube videos of himself learning to skateboard every day, and he’s been steadily improving his skills. “I never thought I was cool enough when I was a kid to skate. Once I reached my 40th birthday, I decided I didn’t really care about cool or uncool anymore, so I bought a board,” Ben Jaeger-Thomas told TIME. Before 40, the stay-at-home dad who also does voice acting work had never stood on a board, so skating has been a ankle-whacking, board-kicking and life-alteringly “Zen” ride for him.

Ten Questions With Peter Schoomaker

Two years ago, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld talked Gen. Peter Schoomaker, into coming out of retirement and leading the Army as its Chief of Staff. Since then, Schoomaker, a former Delta Force commando who’s fought all over the world, has been busy creating what both men want: a completely reorganized ground force with smaller more versatile fighting units. Schoomaker, 59, sat down with TIME’s Sally Donnelly and Douglas Waller to explain the challenges of changing the Army — and working for a very demanding boss.
