Mexico's Maya Train Is An Environmental Disaster

Crouching on all fours, wearing hard hats and knee pads, we shuffle and drag ourselves one by one through the small earthy hollow. When we reach the other side, a large cavern spreads out before us: countless stalactites hang suspended like icicles from the roof and mineral draperies dress large chalk columns. The floor beneath our feet is uneven, rising and falling like waves, before disappearing into a body of water at the other end.

Mountain Without Mercy | TIME

It was clear to anyone listening to the Mount Everest radio traffic that Rob Hall had decided to die. For Hall, there seemed to be little drama in the decision–but for someone in his position, there rarely is. In the brutal cold and almost oxygen-free air found at Everest altitudes, a sort of woozy resignation sets in. Decisions to climb or descend, rest or trudge on, get made with a fatalistic shrug.

Move Over, Alpha Males. Why Being a Beta May Be Better (at Least for Baboons)

Courtesy Jeanne AltmanA male baboon displays his powerful teeth. It’s stressful at the top, at least for male baboons, according to a new study that finds that alpha males — those at the pinnacle of the social hierarchy — are significantly more stressed out than a group’s No. 2, or beta male. The research contrasts with earlier studies in both humans and other primates that have found that stress levels generally tend to drop the higher you ascend on the social ladder.

Religion: Hollywood Knows, Mr. A.

Hollywood long ago discovered that priests and nuns were box office. Protestants were tossed a few films such as A Man Called Peter and Battle Hymn, but it was the Roman collar that looked best on Bing Crosby, Spencer Tracy and Pat O’Brien—not to mention Barry Fitzgerald, Van Johnson, Paul Douglas, Gregory Peck, Charles Boyer, Montgomery Clift, Henry Fonda, Charles Bickford, Karl Maiden, and even Humphrey Bogart and Frank Sinatra. All this adds up to vulgar exploitation of the Roman Catholic Church, says Film Critic Robert Brizzolara of The Voice of St.

San Antonio: The Mayor's Other Woman

TIME October 24, 1988 12:00 AM EDT If U.S. Hispanics have had a political folk hero lately, it has been bright and handsome mayor Henry Cisneros of San Antonio. So high had his star risen during four much admired terms in office that in 1984 Cisneros was considered a potential Democratic vice-presidential candidate. But last week the mayor, 41, took a dive off his pedestal into the sort of public mess that swallowed up Gary Hart.

School Lunch: This is the Scary Amount of Pizza Kids Are Really Eating

Pizza is a ubiquitous part of the American diet, but a new study finds that it’s an even bigger contributor than we thought—so big, researchers say, that physicians should address pizza intake during doctors’ visits. To figure out how much pizza kids and adolescents are eating, researchers looked at the diets of children ages 2 to 11 and teens aged 12 to 19 from 2003-2010. They found that pizza makes up about 20% of kids’ daily calories on days when they eat pizza—and despite the insistence of some politicians that pizza should be considered a vegetable for its ample tomato sauce, those calories aren’t coming from an onslaught of veggies.
