Secret Service Fence Jumper Shows Agency's Arrogance and Negligence

At least a dozen times a year, intruders try to jump the White House fence. Many of them succeed. Until Omar Gonzalez penetrated the White House itself, the Secret Service had stopped the intruders before they got inside, as the Secret Service admirably did on Wednesday evening when a Uniformed Division dog took down a fence jumper. But this recent incident spotlights how foolish it is to keep the White House fence where it is.

Teaching: The Fear of Being Wrong

A shy, balding, 44-year-old private-school teacher who shuns educational jargon and rejects the notion that either life or learning can be forced into nifty patterns is quietly emerging as one of U.S. education’s most damning critics. In his 1964 book, How Children Fail, Teacher John Holt unreeled a series of classroom anecdotes to show that children—beset by teacher-imposed fear, confusion and boredom—merely grope for right answers, rather than understand. In a sequel, How Children Learn, to be published next month, he illustrates the spontaneous ways in which kids embrace knowledge before they enter schools, where they “learn to be stupid.

The Most Expensive Penny - Top 10 Things You Didn't Know About the Penny

The 1943 copper-alloy cent is one of the most enigmatic coins in American numismatics — and reportedly the most valuable Lincoln penny of all. Just 40 of the coins — probably created by accident, on copper-alloy one-cent blanks left in the presses in the wartime years when pennies were converted to steel — are known to exist. The first 1943 copper cent was sold in 1958 for more than $40,000.
