Should Teenagers Use Wegovy to Lose Weight?

For a long time, if Dr. Emily Breidbart, a pediatric endocrinologist at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, wanted to put one of her patients on a weight-loss drug, she often chose metformin. It wasn’t a perfect option. The drug is approved to treat diabetes, not obesity, and typically leads only to “very modest” weight loss, she says. But Breidbart had few other choices for her adolescent patients. “Medications that have been approved for obesity really have been few and far between” for kids and teenagers, she says.

Slight drop, but plastic surgery still a $10 billion industry

A reflection of the still sagging economy, there was a slight overall drop (1%) in elective cosmetic procedures last year compared with 2008, but 12.5 million Americans still spent an estimated $10 billion on plastic surgery in 2009, according to data released this week by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Nine percent fewer people opted for more invasive surgical procedures, such as nose jobs or breast implants, last year compared with 2008, but minimally invasive procedures, including things like chemical peels and laser hair removal, increased by 1% overall.

SOUTH AFRICA: Military Joke | TIME

At Pretoria’s Zwartkop air base one day last week, a bareheaded officer of the South African Air Force snapped to attention before a grim court-martial. The accused was Group Captain Arthur French Shuttleworth, a veteran bomber pilot who won Britain’s Distinguished Flying Cross during World War II. Shuttleworth was charged with “scandalous behavior, unbecoming to an officer and gentleman,” because he had 1) chucked a bottle of mixed pickles at a photograph of South Africa’s Nationalist Defense Minister François Christiaan Erasmus, and 2) dropped the offending photograph into a nearby fishpond.

The Drug Cascade | TIME

When it comes to killing pain these days, a prescription for a high-powered opioid is no longer enough. Once you’re taking, say, OxyContin or hydrocodone on a regular basis, you’ll probably get pills for the side effects: pills to control the nausea, pills to regulate your testosterone production, and pills to help you use the bathroom when the drugs numb the receptors in your intestines that are supposed to help move things along.

The Fight to Free Evan Gershkovich

Growing up in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and ’70s, Mikhail Gershkovich and Ella Milman learned to be careful. Children knew not to repeat what their parents said in their kitchens. Mikhail recalls his father, who grew up under Stalin, offering a piece of advice: If you’re going to tell a political joke, “make sure there are no witnesses.” Mikhail and Ella both emigrated to the U.S. in 1979, seeking to escape rising antisemitism and life under Soviet rule.

The Sports World Has Lost Its Mind Over Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark’s arrival in the WNBA has set off a firestorm of chatter, discourse, and debate the likes of which we’ve never really seen in sports. The only 21st century precedent I can think of is Tebowmania, about a dozen years ago, when former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbackTim Tebow enjoyed some success in the NFL, with the Denver Broncos. Tebow’s open embrace of his Christian faith sparked a conversation about the appropriateness of religious zeal in the public square, in this case the football field.
